Shall we wait to see quieter road surfaces?

12-07-2011

The Czech roads may be quieter. This is made possible by new asphalt mixtures with sound protection properties using asphalt cements produced by the company Paramo.

Pardubice, July 12th, 2011 – Solutions to reduce roads noise level have been prepared by specialists from the Pardubice refinery in collaboration with Institute of Analytical Chemistry, technical colleges' professionals and road organizations.

To European trends relevant innovations from Paramo, their functionalities have been successfully assessed by road laboratories of the CTU Prague and BUT in Brno, are designed for roads surfaces with reduced noise level. It is by a polymer modified cement of MOFALT 45/80-65 to be used for mastic asphalt carpets types SMA LA MOFALT 65/105-75 and MOFALT RMB, the latter with finely ground granulate of used tires for drainage carpets.

"Asphalt mixtures for low noise road surfaces with higher porosity are made of modified asphalts. Higher content of elastomer provides the functional properties of a lacunar mixture and its ability of certain sound waves and vibrations absorption contributes to increasing of the sound insulation efficiency. Using the cements modified with ground rubber of used tires is also enjoyed. The ground rubber is a low-cost modifier and its utilization in the road asphalts is the best utilization of this secondary raw material. In particular, the drainage carpets with the ground rubber have scored significant progress in the noise reduction in Europe and attenuation of noise by 8 to 10 dB (A) has been achieved. Such attenuation is equivalent to reducing the number of cars by 90%." explains Mr. Jiří Plitz, head of asphalts development department of Paramo.

The quiet road surface is more expensive compared with the standard one, however, as Mr. Jiří Plitz emphasizes, using the asphalt mixtures with sound insulation properties will save a lot of money spent on construction of noise walls along the roads or for sound insulation of buildings.

Application of quiet road surfaces should be a priority particularly on busy roads in the vicinity of residential development. The solutions to reduce noise level on the Czech roads are ready. "The question remains whether investors will support these intentions," concludes Mr. Plitz.

PARAMO, a.s., a member of the UNIPETROL/PKN ORLEN Group, processes crude oil for refinery and asphalt products, and also for lubricating and process oils, incl. subsequent and ancillary products. The refinery purchases and processes oil hydrogen and hydrocrack products. Intermediate products are used in the production of basic oils and lubricating oils which contain very low levels of sulphur. The company employs 661 people.
