A speciality from Paramo helped restorers

Restorers have successfully applied asphalt PARABIT H 90/100 produced in the Pardubice refinery to the sculptural decoration of the baroque church Karlskirche in Vienna.

Pardubice, 10.02. 2010 –Restorers have successfully applied asphalt PARABIT H 90/100 produced in the Pardubice refinery to the sculptural decoration of the baroque church Karlskirche in Vienna.

“Restorers under command of Christian Gurtner have tried to apply various binding agents on the sculptural decoration of the baroque church. With respect to its use, PARABIT H 90/100 from Paramo was the best rated product. It is the best evidence that Paramo has its specialities listed in the product portfolio by no accident,” says Martin Kašpar – Manager of the Department of Special Products Sales and Purchase.

PARABIT H 90/100 belongs to a group of industrial asphalts used mostly as coating compounds, for the production of casting insulation materials, etc. In the event of this baroque church Karlskirche in Vienna, the product was used by restorers as a binding agent, which not only sealed sculptures, but also holds individual parts of decorations together.

In the largest baroque cathedral north of the Alps, the new asphalt insulation from Paramo has replaced the original historical technology based on tar. “Insulations were used originally for insulating joints and fitting upper parts of decorative stone vases made from bioclastic limestone. From the historical point of view, the tar insulation (or joint filler) has proven its worth rather then the joint material based on lime mortar (upper parts of vases were originally fitted using two methods – on a tar substance or on lime mortar). Vases with joints filled by tar substance were significantly less damaged then vases with lime mortar joints,” states Karol Bayer from the University of Pardubice.
